Compatibility

Best viewed with . . .

When making your website, keep in mind that people will view it using different types of computers with different settings. These days it seems there are too many sites that say "This site viewed ONLY with Netscape!". Make your sites look good in both Internet Explorer and Netscape, on any computer with any type of settings.

the differences

Some designers out there just don't realize what differences there are between computers and settings. All computers use a different resolution, browser, color mode, and other various things. Make your site viewable by all computers, not just certain ones. By doing this, your site will appeal to a much larger audience.

Making your sites look good in all resolutions is a fairly simple task. All you really have to do is make sure that your tables don't exceed 600 pixels in width, and your home-free. If your tables do exceed 600, people using 640x480 will have problems viewing your page.

it's not the end!

Just because your site looks better at a high resolution, doesn't mean that it looks necessarily bad at a low one. In fact, my page is perfectly viewable at 640x480 resolution. But, I still recommend that you use 800x600 to view my site, simply because it looks better. I also recommend using 16 bit color mode, but you can still view it in 8 bit color (256 colors).

extra technologies

There are many different technologies that work with only one type of browser, or one type of computer. ActiveX is one of these, it is entirely windows based, so Mac users will have problems using your site. Technologies such as Shockwave and Flash are great things for producing multimedia pages that are pretty and interactive. On the other hand, you must download a special file for your browser if you do this.

keep in mind . . .

When making your site, always keep in mind that not everyone views your site with the exact same settings! I cannot stress this enough. At least try to make your site compatible with lower-end users, it should help out in the long run. Above all, try to remember that just because you hate Internet Explorer, doesn't mean you should punish IE users!
