Before Starting

On the Internet there seems to be so many unorganized sites that seem to be just a mess of graphics, text, links, and other junk. Why? Probably because these people don't seem to *think* about what they are doing before the go and do it.

have a point at least

It seems that every other site I come across doesn't seem to have any type of "feeling" at all. What I mean is, they seem like they have no point, no purpose, and are just a mess of info about the authors life and a nice little links page. The point is, you shouldn't make a page unless there is actually a point to it. I have ran across pages that are exactly that - pointless pages! People seem to just want to OWN their own little spot on the net, so they can say "I have a website", even though it has no actual content.

have a plan!

Before you actually start making your website, have some type of plan on how to do it. I'm not saying that you should know every little thing you will have on the page before you make it, but at least have a small idea. Anyone can throw up a jumbled mess of graphics, text, and links, but it takes a little brain-power to make it look worthwhile. Before I begin, I usually write down what I want to discuss on the page on a piece of note-paper. Don't just jump in and make a page, have some idea of what to put on it!

links, links, & links

Really, this is quite ridiculous. One out of every five sites I go to have nothing but links to other sites. If this is all you are going to do, then why make a page??? While in chat rooms I often see things such as, "Great content, Ed!", or "WOW! Nice information, Sam!". It is very rare I see things such as "Boy, you have a great links page!", or "WOW! What a collection of great links!". Not that it is bad to have a links page or anything, but you should have a *little* content besides just links!

try, just a little?

If you do decide to make a page, put some effort into it. Anyone can put up a links page, or some page that has just copied information off of other pages. But it takes some work to come up with something original, fresh, and interesting. If you decide to have a page, be willing to spend an hour or so every day working on it, especially if you try to make money from it. A little bit of thinking can go quite a long way.
